Geography trips to the Bay of Naples
Geography trips to the Bay of Naples
Welcome to Italy’s fiery classroom
The Bay of Naples is a geographer’s playground – dramatic cliffs, ancient ruins, and one of Europe’s only active volcanoes all packed into one stunning region. Here you can see textbook topics come to life, from plate tectonics and hazard management to coastal processes and human geography.
Hike up Mount Vesuvius, explore the preserved towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum, and see first-hand how communities live with the constant threat of natural disaster. A day trip to Capri offers a look at tourism and island geography, complete with a hydrofoil ride from Sorrento and a scenic tour of AnaCapri. There’s also time to visit Pozzuoli, a fascinating area shaped by volcanic activity, and even a guided walking tour of Rome, including the iconic Colosseum.

“My top pick of things to see and do”
The Bay of Naples is packed with geological wonders, but here are a few standout experiences I always recommend for Geography groups:
Mount Vesuvius
Take a trip to the top of Mount Vesuvius, the volcano that dominates the skyline of the Amalfi Coast.
Pompeii
One of the most famous ancient sites in the world. Almost 2000 years ago Mount Vesuvius erupted covering Pompeii in ash, preserving life as it was 2000 years ago, and excavations are ongoing.
Herculaneum
The eruption of Vesuvius in 79AD buried this town in an airtight layer of solidified volcanic mud, unlike the volcanic ash of Pompeii which took a while to settle and become compressed.
Guided Visit to the Island of Capri
The island of Capri, is famed for its rugged landscape and designer boutiques and cafes.
Amalfi Coast
A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Amalfi Coast is spectacular.
Phlegraean Fields
The Phlegraean Fields is an area north of Naples made up of approximately 40 ancient volcanoes and is a landscape that abounds with steaming fumaroles and boiling mud.
Pozzuoli
A spa town in the centre of the Phlegrean Fields west of Naples.
Ischia
Ischia is an island of volcanic origins in Italy’s Campania region, at the northern end of the Bay of Naples.
