History trips to Rome
There’s no place like Rome…
It’s hard to name a city as impressive as Rome. From ancient ruins to Renaissance palaces, it’s a city where history is alive. Around every corner, there’s a story waiting to be uncovered: the rise of the Roman Empire, the birth of Catholicism, the drama of fascism and resistance, and the shaping of modern Italy.
Whether your students are exploring the political power of the Forum, standing where emperors once ruled, or tracing the evolution of governance from Caesar to Mussolini, Rome offers a rich, layered experience.

“My top pick of things to see and do”
Rome is packed with historical points of interest, but here are a few standout experiences I always recommend for History groups:
Arco di Constantino
Standing alongside the Colosseum, Constantine’s triumphal arch was one of the last great Roman monuments.
Colosseum
The Colosseum was built during the reign of Emperor Vespasiano c. 72 AD and dedicated in 80 AD by his son Titus.
Day Trip to Ancient Ostia
With preservation in places matching that of Pompeii, the ancient Roman port of Ostia Antica is an extraordinary site.
Imperial Forums
The Imperial Forums, built around 1AD, were the centre of Roman society and consisted of temples and public squares.
Palatine Hill
A number of palaces dating from the 1st century can be found on the hill overlooking the Roman Forum.
Pantheon
Built in 27BC, as a temple the Pantheon has been also used as a church and a market.
Roman Forums
Now a sprawl of ancient ruins, the Roman Forum used to be the centre of life in Rome during the Roman Empire with public squares, temples and law courts.

The most popular questions, answered
Rome gives students a vivid sense of how empires are built, how political systems evolve and how ideas of leadership, law and identity take shape. Exploring sites linked to the Roman Empire, the Church and the rise of Fascism helps students connect classroom learning with the real forces that shaped Europe.
Students studying imperial expansion, governance, religion, dictatorship and the foundations of Western civilisation will find rich context throughout the city. Visits to the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Pantheon and Vatican City bring key themes to life in a way textbooks simply can’t.
