Geography trips to Sicily
Geography trips to Sicily
Where tectonics meet tourism
Sicily’s one of those places that ticks every box for a geography trip. It’s the biggest island in the Med, and it’s bursting with dramatic landscapes – from the towering black lava walls of Alcantara Gorge to the breathtaking views from the top of Mount Etna, Europe’s largest active volcano.
There’s so much to get stuck into: coastal processes, hazard management, tourism, agriculture – you name it. It’s a brilliant place to see how people live and farm in the shadow of a volcano that’s as much a lifeline as it is a threat. And with sunshine, great food, and a warm welcome thrown in, it’s no wonder Sicily’s a favourite with geography groups.

“My top pick of things to see and do”
Sicily is packed with geological wonders, but here are a few standout experiences I always recommend for Geography groups:
Full day excursion to Etna
Mount Etna is Europe’s largest active volcano and uniquely formed on a boundary between the European and African continental plates.
Lipari
Lipari is the largest island in the Aeolian archipelago known as a volcanic arc and although still active, has not erupted for 1400 years.
Vulcano Island
Vulcano is located north-east of Sicily and south of the Island of Lipari.
Alcantara Gorge
Situated to the south-west of Taormina is the Alcantara Gorge.
Palermo
Noted for its rich history, culture, architecture and gastronomy, playing an important role throughout much of its 2,700 year existence.
Agrigento
Can be found in the south west of Sicily. It is a medieval town which is home to ruined Greek temples that stand, or partially stand, against a backdrop of the sea.
Catania
Since the eighteenth century, Catania has been the second most important city of Sicily, supplanting Messina in that respect.
