Geography trips to Northern Catalonia
Geography trips to Northern Catalonia
Dramatic landscapes and real-world learning
Northern Catalonia is where geography gets hands-on. It’s a region shaped by volcanoes, rivers and coastlines – and groups love how much variety they can pack into one trip.
We’re big fans of Garrotxa Volcanic Park for its lava flows and crater walks, and the River Tordera is ideal for fluvial fieldwork. Add in the dramatic peaks of Montserrat, and urban geography in Barcelona, and you’ve got a trip that ticks all the boxes – plus a few you didn’t expect.
It’s a dream of a trip that blends fieldwork with culture in unforgettable settings.

“My top pick of things to see and do”
Northern Catalonia is packed with geological wonders, but here are a few standout experiences I always recommend for Geography groups:
Barcelona
No visit to Catalonia is complete without a visit to the vibrant Catalan capitol.
Garrotxa Natural Park
Garrotxa Natural Park is an area of outstanding natural beauty covering 120km2 and is renowned for its biodiversity. It contains some of the most interesting volcanic landscape in Europe.
Montserrat
Montserrat is one of Catalonia’s most important religious sites but is also a Natural Park.
Tordera River Valley
Tordera River Basin is a non-regulated river basin and presents typical Mediterranean conditions with a high environmental diversity, ranging from the mountain tops of the headwaters to the delta area where it meets the Mediterranean Sea.
Castellfollit de la Roca
The small town of Castellfollit de la Roca rises up on a spectacular columnar basalt escarpment, 40 metres high and nearly a kilometre long that has been shaped by the river Fluvià.
Croscat Volcano
The volcanic cinder cone of El Croscat is entirely covered with vegetation with the exception of the formerly quarried area that takes a slice out of the volcano and reveals the inner structure, composed of layers of tephra and volcanic bombs.
