“My top pick of things to see and do”
The Opal Coast has lots to do, with fantastic opportunities to practise your French, but here are a few standout experiences I always recommend for language groups:
Boulangerie
Students watch and listen to the baker describe, in French, the process of making traditional French bread and croissants, before getting the chance to produce and eat their own.
Goat Farm
Your group will take a guided tour of the goats farm to see how the animals are reared and see how the distinctive goats cheese is made.
Guided Tour of Boulogne
France’s first fishing port has an impressive old quarter with cobbled streets and a beautiful Cathedral.
Les Chocolats de Beussent
A look at chocolate production followed by a tasting.
Nausicaá National Sea Centre
Nausicaa is much more than just an aquarium. It is a unique centre for the discovery of the marine environment which is fun, educational and scientific all at the same time, focusing mainly on the relationship between mankind and the sea.
Practising French at Le Marché Place Dalton
A central meeting place for citizens of Boulogne, the square on Place Dalton extends to Rue Thiers and is the location for the city’s main open-air market on Wednesdays and Saturday mornings.
Snail Farm
The French eat 25,000 tonnes of snails a year, the equivalent to 700 million individual snails! Visit a working snail farm to give your students an insight into how snails are reared and farmed.

The most popular questions, answered
The Opal Coast offers students their first taste of everyday French life without the intensity of a major city. Its approachable pace helps students relax into listening and speaking, building confidence through small, achievable interactions that genuinely stick.
Esto designs Opal Coast itineraries around participation rather than performance. Students use French little and often throughout the day, helping the language feel familiar, practical and increasingly comfortable.
Students encounter French in real, tangible settings where listening and responding feel purposeful. These moments help language skills build quietly, especially for learners who benefit from reassurance and repetition.
Many groups stay at the Château d’Ebblinghem, Esto’s exclusive northern France accommodation. With group co‑ordinators on site, it provides a welcoming environment where language practise and group confidence continue into the evening.
Trips include accommodation, transport and a carefully shaped itinerary that supports language learning without pressure. The structure is designed to feel calm and reassuring, particularly for students new to overseas travel.
Esto acts as a thoughtful design partner, shaping trips that feel manageable, purposeful and rewarding. Support is built into the flow of the journey, giving teachers confidence while helping students take their first steps into real‑world language use.

“Brilliant itinerary, so THANK YOU! Students got so much French as we would always insist on tours in French. They really enjoyed them and were really educated!.”
