History trips to Paris
History trips to Paris
Revolution and royalty in the French capital
Paris is a brilliant destination for history students. It’s where the French Revolution kicked off, where kings built palaces to show off their power, and where ideas like Liberty, Equality and Fraternity first took hold.
This trip gives students a great understanding of how France became the modern nation it is today. You could visit La Conciergerie, which started out as a royal palace and ended up as a prison during the Revolution. Explore Les Invalides, home to Napoleon’s tomb and packed with military history. And of course, there’s Versailles, not just a fancy building, but a symbol of absolute monarchy and the kind of excess that helped spark change.

“My top pick of things to see and do”
Paris is packed with historical points of interest, but here are a few standout experiences I always recommend for History groups:
Arc de Triomphe
At the end of the impressive Champs Elysees, this famous landmark was commissioned by Napoleon in 1806 as a tribute to his victories.
Chateau de Versailles
The palace, begun in the late 1600s, was the dream of Louis XIV and home of the French monarchy until the demise of the aristocracy.
Cité des Sciences et de L’industrie
Part of Universcience, this ultra-modern science museum at La Vilette aims to promote public interest in science, research and industry.
Eiffel Tower
Probably the most famous of all the Paris landmarks, the Eiffel Tower majestically overlooks all of Paris.
Les Invalides – Army Museum
Napoleon is buried here under the golden dome of Les Invalides and the museum contains a variety of memorabilia relating to military history.
Musée du Louvre
The Louvre Museum, former residence of the kings of France, has for two centuries been one of the biggest museums in the world.
Sacre Coeur
With its distinctive white dome, the Sacre Coeur sits proudly next to Montmartre.
Seine River Cruise
A tour along the river Seine will offer students the chance to see most of Paris’s sights and institutions from the river, including the Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame Cathedral, and the Louvre.
