“My top pick of things to see and do”
China is packed with case studies, but here are a few standout experiences I always recommend for Geography groups:
Forbidden City (Beijing)
The Forbidden City was the former imperial palace, which was the home to twenty four Chinese emperors over 491 years between 1420 and 1911.
Friendship Store (Beijing)
In the 1980s, every major town had a Friendship Store. The chain was started in the late 50s as a sign of friendship between the Chinese and foreigners when China first opened to the outside world.
Tiananmen Square (Beijing)
Tiananmen Square was the original gate to the Imperial Palace, and has been burnt down and rebuilt many times between 1417 and 1651.
Silk Alley (Beijing)
The new Xiushui Market is a modern five-story building that stands just next to the former grounds of the Silk Street clothes market.
Great Wall of China
The Great Wall of China was built over more than two thousand years.
Grand Canal Cruise (Suzhou)
Taking a boat ride on the old Canal gives a full view of the landscape of a typical river town in southern China.
Shanghai Harbour Cruise
Huangpu River, a symbol of Shanghai, originates in Dianshan Lake and empties into the Yangtze River at Wusongkou.
Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Centre
This hall was built to show the achievement of the city planning and construction.
Three Gorges Dam
Enormous and ambitious – these are just two of the words to best describe China’s Three Gorges Dam.
Yangtze River Cruise
Take an internal flight to Chongqing before boarding your 5* boat for a 3 day cruise through the spectacular scenery of the Yangtze river.

The most popular questions, answered
China gives students the chance to explore some of the world’s most dramatic examples of rapid urbanisation, environmental management, and cultural transformation. Seeing these contrasts first hand helps them connect big geographical themes with real places and real people.
The country offers extraordinary variety, from megacities and ancient settlements to river systems and rural landscapes. Students can observe how physical and human processes interact at scale, giving them rich case studies they can draw on long after the trip.
Itineraries often include the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, and the Temple of Heaven, alongside time exploring Beijing’s traditional hutongs. These visits help students investigate heritage, population change, and the pressures of modern development in a hands on, memorable way.
