Psychology trips to Vienna
Psychology trips to Vienna
Where psychoanalysis was born
Vienna isn’t just beautiful; it’s the birthplace of psychoanalysis and a city that changed how we think about thinking. Freud lived and worked here, making Vienna the perfect place to trace the roots of psychology.
But Vienna’s story goes deeper. In 1938, cheering crowds welcomed Hitler, and the city’s Jewish community was later destroyed under the Final Solution. Understanding anti-Semitic feelings prior to the war offers an insight into the nature of prejudice and how it develops.
A psychology trip to Vienna offers a powerful insight into human behaviour – and why history matters.

“My top pick of things to see and do”
Vienna is packed with inspiration, but here are a few standout experiences I always recommend for psychology groups:
Sigmund Freud Museum
Opened in 1971 on the initiative of Freud’s daughter, Anna, the museum is located in the apartment where Sigmund lived and worked from 1898 to 1938, when he was forced into exile by the Nazis.
Viktor Frankl Museum
The neurologist and psychiatrist Viktor Frankl, founder of the “Third Viennese School of Psychotherapy”, resided at the museum’s location since his return to Vienna in 1945.
Narrenturm (Fool’s Tower)
Meaning “Fools’ Tower,” the Narrenturm is continental Europe’s oldest mental hospital.
Mauthausen Concentration Camp
The Mauthausen Memorial provides information posts with historical photographs and explanatory texts giving a background to those areas of the Memorial in which the original buildings no longer exist.
The Naturhistorisches Museum
The Evolution of Man. Visitors to the Museum have the opportunity not only to see the evolution of man as a historical, biological process, but also to perceive cultural development as a significant component of humanisation.
Judenplatz Museum & Holocaust Memorial
The Judenplatz Museum provides visitors with an insight into Jewish life in medieval Vienna.
Danube River Cruise
Vienna is known around the world as the city on the Danube. Boat cruises go around the 21km-long Danube Island, which was originally created as a flood defence passing the modern skyline of the city as well as “green Vienna”.
Sightseeing Tour of Vienna
A great introduction to the city this tour will give you an overall impression of the most significant sights of Vienna including the MAK, State Opera House, Museum Quarter, Hofburg Imperial Palace, Parliament, City Hall and the Burgtheater.
