The Ailey Studios offer numerous options for unique group experiences, including private and open classes in a variety of techniques from around the world, as well as class observations and discounted tickets to Ailey performances, and much more.
Broadway Classroom Workshops
A great opportunity to experience Broadway not just visit it. Workshops are designed to introduce basic theatre skills through physical and vocal warm-ups, focus/listening exercises and theatre games. More tailored sessions are available in stage combat, improvisation as well as ‘Step by Step', a dance master class in the style of the show you're seeing. Students can also get audition tips from a casting director to give them an advantage in this competitive world.
Broadway Workshops - Broadway 101
Give your students the perfect introduction to Broadway with some basic theatre and creativity skills. Explore Broadway’s historical significance as well as the training process of a Broadway actor. The workshop starts with physical and vocal warm-ups, followed by interactive focus/listening exercises and theatre games. The content of this workshop is not show specific and is a great introduction for students just starting our in their theatre studies.
Broadway Workshops - Musical Theatre, Song & Movement
This workshop is one of the most popular with our groups. The session is taught by Broadway performers. Sheet music will be provided to the group, who will then work with a cast
member and a pianist. The workshop recreates a true Broadway rehearsal with the participants, who learn the choreography,
staging and music from the Broadway production that they are seeing (restrictions may apply).
This is the perfect workshops for dance specialists as during the workshop participants have the opportunity to experience many different Broadway dance styles. This session can be taught by a
performer from the show that the group is seeing and also feature choreography from that show. Other options for this workshop include a professional dance audition or a specific type of dance (tap, modern, hip hop, etc). Includes time for questions, pictures and autographs.
Broadway Workshops - Making a Scene
Professional actors or teaching artists will advise your group on acting choices, vocal techniques and character development
designed to encourage bold and creative acting choices. Working on a particular scene, the focus in this workshop is on interpreting a text and suggests techniques for bringing the text to life in truthful, imaginative and specific ways. Content in this workshop is not show specific.
Broadway Workshops - The Art of the Quick Change
An essential skill for any theatre performer/actor is to be able change costumes quickly during a scene change. During the workshop students have the opportunity to see this quick change in action before taking part themselves. Participants will learn that it takes many people on and off stage to keep a Broadway show moving. From lights, sound, music, costumes and set changing, a scene can go from a whole different setting in 30 seconds. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions about careers, costumes, set pieces, etc. A very exciting, interactive and active workshop!
Broadway Workshops - Business of the Business
Taught by a leading casting director or teaching artist, this session gives participants the business skills for a successful career in
theatre. The group will learn about audition procedures, agent submissions, head shots, resumes and more! The instructor will
also help students set personal goals and will select a few students to experience a “cold” reading in a constructive environment. There is the option to add on a Q&A with a Broadway performer for more insider experience.
