Record number of students for Erasmus

The number of EU students receiving grants through the Erasmus programme has increased to a record high of nearly 270,000; up 6% from last year.

The news of the increase is welcoming and The Group of Liberals and Democrats in the European Parliament (ALDE) are extremely pleased with the results. “Erasmus clearly strengthens cross-cultural communication and mutual understanding”, said Yana Toom, ALDE coordinator in the Culture Committee, “and enables young people to experience the very rich, colourful and beautiful mosaic of diversity in Europe”

Spain proved to be the most popular destination with over 40,000 students choosing their to study or gain work experience, over 10,000 more than Germany and France. Spain also sent the most; over 39,000 students travelled from Spain, followed by France (35,311) and Germany (34,891).The average Erasmus grant €272 per student a month.

Students from the UK using the Erasmus programme have also increased with over 14,000 student receiving grants, up a mighty 7% from last year.

The UK will be hoping for even more success since the launch of Erasmus+ in January. The updated EU programme puts more focus on youth and sport with a total budget of nearly €15 billion set aside for the next 6 years. It will fund opportunities for 4 million people including 2 million students in higher education looking to study or gain work experience abroad, both within and beyond Europe.

Your Future in Europe fully supports Erasmus. Find out how attending this great event will inspire your students to get involved in the programme.
