World War destruction and years of communist rule have done much to damage Poland’s heritage. Yet amazingly the ancient royal city of Krakow survives and with its medieval market square and Grand Cloth Hall, the city rivals the beauty of Prague and Vienna. School trips to Krakow for history students visiting the Jewish quarter where Schindler’s List was filmed and Auschwitz-Birkenau, bring home the realities of Nazi occupation. Warsaw in contrast has little architecture that pre-dates 1945 but the reconstructed old town has a lively ambience. The uprising and the Nazi’s systematic annihilation of the city are well documented in the city's museums.
