The team at European Study Tours were thrilled to welcome over 200 students to Focus on French on Friday 6th February at the Palais des Congres in Paris.
As Focus on French is designed to help students with their speaking and listening skills, the conference is delivered entirely in French. Liza Juvin chaired the conference, firstly by introducing herself to the group and opening with a couple questions to warm up our audience.
Zoe Diderich is an interpreter and lecturer at the University of Westminster. Zoe brought her experience as an interpreter to showcase the types of employment that could be available to those looking for work using a foreign language.
We also had some great volunteers! Niamh from London Oratory tried her hand at simultaneous interpreting, translating Julia Roberts' winning speech from the 73rd Academy Awards for her role in Erin Brockovich. Niamh did really well keeping up with Zoe especially in mimicking her emotive actions as the speech continued.
Felicity from Guildford High demonstrated consecutive interpreting with friend of EST and Marketing Consultant Mark Brill playing a policeman and Zoe helping as a shoplifter who had stolen some marshmallows! You could tell how difficult it was to not only translate French to English but back from English to French when the policeman was reading the offender's rights.
Stephanie Bouchet from marketing firm Rouge Frog spoke about her own healthy lifestyle - looking at her reasons for taking part in sports and physical exercise. Students asked how she balancing her work with her active lifestyle, and were invited to talk about factors involving health and well-being, including diets, the effects of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.
Laetitia Beneteau, National Account Manager for Eurostar talked about the impact of tourism in holiday destinations as well as how the Eurostar plays a part in this.
Finally students discussed together whether they thought young people generally have a healthy lifestyle, and if not, would could be done to encourage them to eat well and take part in sports or other activities.
A massive thank you to Liza, Zoe, Mark, Stephanie and Laetitia for their time and contribution to Focus on French and of course thank you to the amazing students and teachers who attended this year! We're already thinking about what we can do next year to make it even better!
You can see some more photos over on Facebook and on our Twitter page.
We'll see you for Focus on French 2016!
