GORDON BROWN: "WE ARE DETERMINED SUCH EVENTS WILL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN."
On his visit to Auschwitz this week, the Prime Minister pledged to increase the number of school pupils who visit the concentration camp to learn about the Nazi genocide of 1.5 million people there during the Second World War. "Nothing, no film, no book, no documentaries, can prepare you for what you see here." he said, vowing never to let children forget the lessons of history.
6 million Poles, including 3 million Jews, perished in Nazi concentration camps between 1940-45 over 1.5 million at Auschwitz alone. A visit to Auschwitz begins with a 15-minute documentary about the liberation of the camp. The tour then takes you round some of the surviving prison blocks, the gas chamber and the crematorium, and the "Death Gate" and housing blocks at Birkenau.
For history students, the Jewish quarter in Krakow where Schindler’s List was filmed and Auschwitz-Birkenau, bring home the realities of Nazi occupation.
